This Franciscan style church, vast, harmonious and enriched by a beautiful portico with Doric columns, dates back to 1500, since in that century and that is in 1562, we find it the seat of a thriving and well-organized Company and with a chaplain deputy to its regular officiation.

It was originally dedicated to the SS. Annunziata, but little by little for the veneration of a simulacrum that had been placed in the temple, by the people it was commonly called «Chiesa del SS. Crucifix ».

The church was located outside the castle walls, where the road that comes from Cesa joined with the one that from Marciano continues towards Lucignano.
The church had a small bell gable with two bells and lacked a sacristy.

Until the 1500s, only the altar existed inside, the one dedicated to the Madonna, and on this altar there was a beautiful painting on a panel from the Sienese school, where the Annunciation was painted on the gold background.

Later, probably when the other altar was built, the picture was replaced by a statue of the Virgin in scagliola with a small wooden baby Jesus on her knees.

In the early 1600s, as the veneration towards the Crucifix grew, a grandiose Baroque altar in plaster was built on the left wall, based on a design by the sculptor Pozzi, for the decent conservation of the sacred image.

On May 20, 1898, the altar of Our Lady of Sorrows was added to recover the symmetry of the temple.

The church possessed various works of art, mostly coming from the old Pieve di Santo Stefano:

a wooden statue of Santa Maria Maddalena of the century. XV °,

the paintings of the Last Supper and the Crucifixion attributed to Vasari,

two beautiful panels from the Sienese school: the first painted the Saints Fabiano and Sebastiano and the second Mary with the Angel.
