The dating of the painting is based on the date of Morosini's death and the hypothesis that Melissi's Crowning with Thorns was executed at the same time. We are thus faced with one of the Arezzo painter's remarkable diptychs from the first half of the 17th century, executed by artists trained in one of the most prominent Florentine workshops of the time. Morosini distinguishes himself here from Melissi by a stronger connection to the painting of the previous century, evident in the serpentine poses of the flagellants and Christ, as well as in the latter's graceful expression despite the torture he endures. In the background are several spectators of the event, who, like the centurion posing in the front row, evoke the scene as a theatrical performance. The use of light, if anything, demonstrates Caravaggio's innovative approach to both revealing and concealing the truth.
