DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

The Madonna of the Girdle is a processional statue that testifies to the spread, in Castiglioni, of a devotion originating in Prato: that of the Virgin giving the girdle to Saint Thomas at the moment of her Assumption into Heaven. According to a medieval legend, the Madonna, now nearing the end of her earthly life, received a second announcement from the Archangel Gabriel: that of her impending death and imminent reunion with her Son, Jesus.
She expressed to the archangel her desire to see all the apostles again and to be buried with them. The apostles, now scattered throughout the world preaching, were snatched up by a cloud and miraculously transported by the Virgin Mary to the Valley of Josaphat. Only Saint Thomas was absent. However, although far away, he had the privilege of seeing Mary as she was assumed into Heaven.
Unaware that he was sharing this extraordinary experience with the other apostles, he asked the Virgin for a tangible sign to show them. She graciously granted his request, giving him the girdle that bound her habit.
The wooden sculpture of the Madonna of the Girdle is dressed in a silk dress embroidered with silver thread, adorned with a crown and jewels made of silver leaf and crystals.
