San Lorenzo tra i Santi Rocco e Sebastiano Monte San Savino
Artist: Il Sansovino
Year: intorno al 1490-1491
Current location: Santa Chiara
Original location: Santa Chiara
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The terracotta altarpiece depicting Saint Lawrence between Saints Roch and Sebastian is an autograph work by Andrea Sansovino.
It is currently housed in the Church of Santa Chiara, the artist's birthplace.
The central altarpiece depicts Saint Lawrence (in the center) flanked by Saints Roch and Sebastian.
The predella is divided into five sections and illustrates:
the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian
the Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence
the Miracle of Saint Roch
the busts of Saint Romuald and Saint Benedict.
It is a glazed terracotta in the Della Robbia style. According to Vasari, the glaze was executed by the Della Robbia family, although more recent studies suggest the workshop of Benedetto Buglioni based on the color tones.
The work is housed in a glazed terracotta frame dating back to the early 16th century.
The altarpiece was not originally created for the Church of Santa Chiara, which is a 17th-century building.
It was initially intended for the Church of San Giovanni or, according to other sources, the parish of Sant'Agata, both in Monte San Savino.
The work was moved to its current location in 1793.
