Natività Monte San Savino
Artist: Luca della Robbia
Year: 1500-1510 circa
Current location: Santa Chiara
Original location: Santa Chiara
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The Nativity, housed in the Church of Santa Chiara in Monte San Savino, is a splendid polychrome glazed terracotta altarpiece.
Although research mentions the workshop of Andrea della Robbia, the work is often attributed to Luca della Robbia the Younger, Andrea's nephew.
In fact, the style and early 16th-century date suggest the work of the della Robbia brothers and sons, who were active during that period.
The work originates from the former priory of Sant'Agata e Lucia and was transferred to the Church of Santa Chiara in 1793.
The scene depicts the Nativity with the Adoration of the Shepherds, a typical Della Robbia style, characterized by white figures against a blue background, often embellished with garlands of fruit and cherubs.
