DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The Madonna and Child in Glory with Saints Agatha, Lucy, Romuald, and Benedict is one of Sansovino's most famous works, located in the Church of Santa Chiara and created shortly after the San Lorenzo altarpiece.
It is a glazed terracotta altarpiece in the Della Robbia style.
The Virgin is depicted in glory with the Child, flanked by Saints Agatha, Lucy, Romuald, and Benedict.
The predella is divided into five sections with:
the busts of Saints Romuald and Benedict;
scenes of the martyrdoms of Saints Sebastian and Lawrence;
the Miracle of Saint Roch.
Originally, the work was intended for the high altar of the Priory of Saints Agatha and Lucy (Sansovino's parish, later demolished). It was moved to its current location in 1793.
