DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

The Assumption of the Virgin with Saints Augustine and Romuald is an altarpiece by Giorgio Vasari, preserved in the Church of Sant'Agostino.

It is an early work that reflects the artist's Mannerist style and is located on the high altar.

The work follows the scheme of Andrea del Sarto's Assunta Passerini: the Virgin Assumed into Heaven, with Saint Augustine (bishop) and Saint Romuald (founder of the Camaldolese order) kneeling below.

The two small panels of the predella, depicting the Baptism of Saint Augustine and the Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew, are currently preserved in the adjacent Oratory of San Giovanni.

The painting is set in a Baroque architectural context, framed by a stucco canopy and flanked by two works by his faithful collaborator, Orazio Porta:

Nativity on the left
Adoration of the Magi on the right
